Books - A Sign of the Times?

Recently my neighboring business, a photographic bookstore named "Timothy Whelan Photography, Fine Photographic Prints & Books" announced he was going out of business. Saddened by the fact that I was losing him as a neighbor and dumbstruck by what is fast becoming a sign of the times with niche market bookstores, I wanted to toss my Kindle in the can. I grew up thinking we are what we read and how fascinating it was to learn what people had on their own nightstands for bedtime reading. It helped me to categorize what type of individual I was dealing with - artsy, academic, romantic or history buff just to name a few. How often do we connect with another person through the love of books or a certain book that we really loved? Happens all the time. You can read Tim's interview with a New York Times Reporter about his journey through time with books.
Delft University of Technology came up with a super cool way to recycle their books after a recent fire forced them to purchase a new collection. The salvaged books became their front desk as a reminder of the past in their new architecture library. My only hesitation is that, is it level?
The change in how we receive our printed media is happening. I know I no longer read a physical newspaper. I sit at my computer over tea first thing in the morning and go through several before I go to work. As liberating as it sounds, freeing yourself from newspaper subscriptions and the disposing/recycling of them, we have just traded one media source for another. I still love my books though, and I have my very own libratorium (a made up word). It's our powder room/library filled with turn of the century garden and design books. How perfect is that? |
