A Family Christmas Carol, the Modern Way

I guess about the time/date of my last blog post the feeling of generosity towards the impending holiday season overcame me. My husband's two sons, whom I adore, found their Mom in a situation that was far from feeling the joy of the season. Wanting to have them home with us and happy, I generously invited their mother and their grandmother to our house for the holiday. My friends thought I had lost my mind, my own son rolled his eyes and asked, "Mom, why do you always do these crazy things?" but, my husband said, "brilliant." I was in New York, when I got the phone call. My husband rings and says, " guess who's coming for dinner?" But, it wasn't just dinner, it was to be three days filled with parties, dinners and intimate gatherings of which I would be including my husband's ex-wife and her mother amongst our friends and extended family. They arrived Christmas Eve Eve and we were off to a party. Christmas Eve we spent with friends only to arrive home to a dinner of lobster and corn on the cob...later to retire knowing Christmas day was dawning. And then, Christmas morning...my husband decided Prosecco was in order to make the occasion more festive. Good move. Grandma is happy! Unwrapping presents Grandma gets her Uggs on! Things start getting a little crazy. My husband says "what?, I have my kids' mother here with their Grandma, my current wife and her son, my stepson, along with my own two grown sons?, I think I need a drink and how convenient that I received a really BAD flask as a gift. "Dude, is that tequila or gin?" All went well and I am here to say that, yes, you can have your "outlaws" for Christmas for the sake of the kids no matter how old the kids are. My two stepsons were so grateful for having their two parents under the same roof for a holiday. Haven't we grown beyond jealous, petty behavior that is so divisive when parents divorce? Christmas fireplace, so lovely. And when the snowstorm ensued, we all huddled together...my husband's ex-wife Maureen, my son and Maureen's mother, Grandma, and I. There was a moment, when I felt like I was taping a reality show for "Sister Wives," but I wouldn't have had it any other way. Oh, and did I mention they stayed two more days? Can't change the weather. Numero Uno Son says "YES, we love Grandma - pop the cork!!" |
